Dear First Year Students

A CW&P Survival Guide, (4/4)

Dear First Year Students,

Starting college can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies and support, you can make the most of this journey. Here are some tips to help you thrive at Sheridan, ensuring a balance between academics, extracurriculars, and personal well-being.

1. Reach Out for Help – Professors, Peers, Tutors, and Seniors

College life can be challenging, and there will be times when you feel stuck or unsure. Remember, you don’t have to face these challenges alone. Professors are here to help; don’t hesitate to approach them with your questions or doubts—they’re invested in your success. Beyond professors, your peers and upper-year students can be invaluable for course support, mentorship, or even general advice. Building connections with them can provide insights into course material, tips on managing assignments, and a sense of camaraderie that makes college life smoother.

2. Use Sheridan’s Resources

Sheridan offers a variety of resources tailored to student needs. From academic help to wellness and recreational activities, there’s support available for every aspect of college life. For academic assistance, you can book time with qualified tutors who can guide you through challenging concepts and help you improve your skills. Additionally, Sheridan’s wellness resources, such as counseling services and fitness facilities, are designed to support your mental and physical health, ensuring you’re well-rounded and resilient during your studies.

3. Master Time Management and Organization

Effective time management and staying organized are non-negotiable for college success. Balancing weekly readings, assignments, and social life can be a challenge, but a well-maintained schedule will help you stay on top of things. Use a digital or physical planner to track deadlines, schedule study sessions, and block out time for personal relaxation. Consistency is key to avoiding last-minute stress and making room for spontaneous activities.

4. Get Involved – Clubs and Extracurricular Activities

While academics are important, extracurricular activities are a vital part of the college experience. With over a hundred clubs at Sheridan, there’s something for everyone! Joining a club or organization can help you make friends, improve your communication skills, and learn more about your interests outside of class. Extracurriculars aren’t just fun—they can also open up networking opportunities and provide a sense of belonging, making college feel more like home.

College is a unique time to learn, grow, and discover yourself. Remember, balancing studies, social life, and self-care is the key to making the most of your experience. Embrace these resources and take charge of your journey!

Best,
